Cell Group Manager

Position Summary

Loxo Oncology at Lilly conducts discovery research, clinical development and regulatory affairs for oncology, with the goal of creating a pipeline of therapies that have the potential to make a meaningful difference for patients. Loxo Oncology at Lilly was created in December 2019, combining the Lilly Research Laboratories oncology organization and Loxo Oncology, which was acquired by Lilly in early 2019. The unit has team members in Boulder, CO, Indianapolis, IN, New York City, South San Francisco, Stamford, CT, and Madrid, Spain.

The Cell Group Manager will lead a team that will perform and manage all tasks required to produce quality cell stocks, ranging from tissue dissociation, serial culture, maintenance and harvest of cells as well as characterization of the cells banked to ensure high quality. With their team, the Cell Group Manager will also perform cell expansions and generate high quality cell preparations for in vivo study implants. The Manager should possess knowledge and understanding of cell culture equipment and procedures including quality control, periodic and preventative maintenance of equipment and troubleshooting. The manager must be willing to be cross trained to work with small animals for xenograft implantation and other related tasks. The manager must be able to work independently and in close collaboration with scientific teams, multi-task effectively and operate under direct technical supervision from the department manager.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Position*

Cell Culture and In Vitro Work (80%)

  • Responsible for in vitro activities to support In Vivo Pharmacology
    • Deliver high-quality cell preps for xenograft implants
    • Expansion/cryopreservation of stocks for the Oncology Cell Bank
    • Development and establishment of new cell lines
  • Tasks may include laboratory management, authoring SOPs, triaging and managing scale up for implant requests, coordinating tasks with other team members, equipment acquisition and maintenance, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proficiently operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.  This includes but is not limited to microscope, CO2 incubators, laminar flow hoods, centrifuge, biosafety cabinets and Vi-Cell instrumentation.
  • Aseptic culture and cell propagation, maintenance, special manipulations, freezing and thawing of cell lines.
  • Assist in maintaining databases for inventory and cell culture technical information as well as characterization data packages for models under study
  • Presentation of data in informal and formal research settings
  • Active hands-on participation in laboratory work as necessary to accomplish laboratory goals
  • Ability to communicate with multiple laboratories to execute experiments
  • Adherence to good research practices, SOPs and notebook documentation standards

People Management (10%):

  • Supervision of cell culture team members
  • Training and direction of cell culture team members
  • Coordination with Director and other In Vivo team members to best manage cell culture team work product and deliverables

In Vivo Work (10%):

  • Xenograft implantation in small animals
  • Assisting team members with pharmacology activities including, but not limited to, dosing and necropsy

Required Qualifications and Background

  • Minimum BA/BS in biology/related discipline OR 5+ years in vitro cell culture experience
  • 3+ years aseptic cell culture/cell biology experience
